A Guy's Advice On Interior Decorating- By: Missy M Peterson

Description : I look no different than your average guy but I do have my opinions on many subjects. I've never been formally educated when it comes to style or design and the color "plum" is still purple to me. You see, it's not that I don't have an eye for style or design. It's that I have difficulty in expressing my tastes in the vernacular that you might be accustomed to.

You should be glad that my tasted have changed as I have matured. When I was younger I was very simplistic in my style and I had very little room for change. Walls were to be white and, to me, any other color was just ridiculous. I refer to really white walls. Off-white or eggshell simply wouldn't do and if you could make white whiter, then I would have been happy.

Things continue to change for me and my style is maturing. I enjoy more colors in my house and I even experimented with accent walls with some pretty striking colors. I let my children pick out their own colors for their accent wall and I guided them toward the more extreme thinking, "if we're going to do this, we're going to do it right!" My daughter sort of follows in my footsteps and stuck to her guns while picking out an earthy red tone for her accent wall.

I guess I'm not your normal guy that might tell you, "I don't care", when it comes to interior design. I do have an opinion. You might not like my reason for why I feel the way I do but it's just the truth and how I view things. I picked out the color "champagne tickle" for the walls in the downstairs part of the house because I liked the color. The name is also very cool but that was just an added bonus. I was like a kid with a box of crayons as I stood in the store looking at all the colors. The color made me happy and I was reasonably sure that it would brighten up an otherwise dark room and I was right. It wasn't overpowering yet it gives the room a nice glow and cheerfulness that another color simply wouldn't have achieved.

Art and architecture always were an interest of mine and I do have artistic abilities. I can draw and paint and if I like a piece of art or architecture it's because it creates a feeling inside of me. I could care less about what is popular and I often dismiss entire forms of art because I don't feel that they are truly art. Somebody bathing themselves in paint and rolling around on a canvas isn't art to me. This also transfers to music and my tastes and styles range from classical all the way to the Star Spangled Banner when it was played at Woodstock.

So, the next time you become frustrated with your boyfriend or husband because you think that they don't have an opinion when it comes to interior design, think about. They have thoughts and feelings no different than you and I do. He simply doesn't understand what you're talking about. All he knows is that he likes what he likes so you're going to have to get his opinion in a little bit of a different way.

Visit some websites that show the work of different interior designers. Yes, let him look at the pretty pictures and then ask him if he could see himself living in such an atmosphere. You might be surprised by some of his insight and when he does find something that he really likes you can be sure that he'll let you know. You see, there is a little interior designer deep down inside of all of us guys.
